US coffee futures finished at a new 7-week high on Friday, with light industry buying helping the market extend the gains in the last trading week of the year, traders said.

The New York Board of Trade's (NYBOT) active March arabica contract rose 0.20 cent to end at $1.0710 per lb, the highest settlement for the contract since November 11.

In intraday trading, the contract ranged from $1.0510 to $1.0750. But it failed to hurdle Thursday's intraday peak of $1.0840, indicating some speculators were taking profits ahead of the new year.

Based on a continuation chart, the NYBOT's nearby arabica contract concluded the year 3.2 percent higher than its settlement of $1.0375 on the last trading day of 2004. Among other arabicas, May finished Friday's session up 0.20 cent at $1.0930 a lb, and back months gained 0.20 to 0.50 cent.
